An accident during a routine safety drill aboard the Norwegian Breakaway today sent four crew members overboard, including a 41-year-old member who later died from his injuries.
According to a police spokesperson, via The Royal Gazette, the crew members were on a lifeboat when its wiring broke, leaving it dangling and dropping all four individuals into the ocean. The ship’s medical team responded immediately, and the crew members were sent to a local hospital for treatment where the yet unnamed Filipino crew member died. The other three victims are still being treated for their injuries.
“Norwegian is profoundly saddened by this loss,” the company shared in a statement, “and we share our deepest sympathies with the crew member’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
“The company is providing full support and care to those involved and is working closely with the Government of Bermuda and relevant authorities to investigate the incident.”
